Alternate Reality Game Hints
WARNING: If you want to figure out everything on your own read no further. Also try going through the hints one at a time-it's something like a walk through although I'm only really telling you where to find the answers and not what the answers are. Finding them yourself, however, is roughly half the fun. I'll put some space between the hints so you don't accidentally read the next one.
The basic progression of the hints walk you through the steps, and a few times a "lighter" hint will be followed by a "stronger", more specific one. Again, it's best to only use these hints if you're really stuck on something.
There are also "sub-hints", spaced a little closer to their parent hints. These are mostly bits added-in to help clear up a point of potential confusion. you
might want to avoid them if you'd rather just stick with working from the main part of the hint, but it's not quite as important.
HINT #1: The password is hidden in the pattern of "glitches" in the teaser video. It' kind of like a four-dimensional Where's Waldo because you may not see the whole code clearly in a single frame. Also, although it can help to watch the video in HD I've found that the 480p version has some slightly clearer frames you can freeze on.
A good technique for deciphering the whole code is to freeze on several frames and take notes on what you think each of the letters is. There is a total of
eight digits in the code so you can have a page with a few rows with eight blanks on them. Don't be afraid to GUESS what a particular number is. If you can't for you life decipher a particular number you can just cycle through 0-9-the system let's you have an unlimited number of tries so you can more-or-less "brute force" your way through any numbers you can't figure out, which should at worst probably be about one or two.
HINT #1b: The sound effect you hear during the glitchy effect is actually from
The Freesound Project, a VERY helpful website for if you're doing a low-budget non-profit project and would rather not pay royalties for sound effects you're only going to be using in one thing. The reason this is a "hint" is because you might think you need to run it through a spectrograph or something to find a hidden image-YOU DON'T. You'd probably only discover something very random-looking. lol
HINT #2: The login name is also hidden in the glitch pattern, but the text is lower case, smaller, and YouTube apparently messed up the quality to the point where it's just about impossible to even see most of the time. To compensate for this, the login name has also been hidden on the login page itself-it shouldn't be too hard to spot.
HINT #3: Although all the "digital goodies" are stored on the page that you'll unlock, there's also a second website to be discovered.
HINT #4: The second website is also a sub-domain of yourworldonfire.net.
HINT #4b: A sub-domain is a page that uses the same domain as our primary site. I.E. resistance.yourworldonfire.net is a sub-domain of this site. Note that the second site is NOT a sub-domain of our sub-domain. Another I.E. thesecrettext.youworldonfire.net. Replace "thesecrettext" with the hidden message.
HINT #5: Try looking for "banned materials", they are WAY easier to see and read than in the Year Zero ARG (mostly out of laziness, sorry), but one part should hopefully stand out a bit more than the others.
HINT #5b: If you aren't entirely familiar with the Year Zero ARG, "banned materials" are essentially the same as "banned media:
NINWiki Article. It is not to be confused with the media content that the Bureau of Morality is "blocking"-AKA our "digital goodies".
HINT #6: The "secret code" contains four words, which should be entered without spaces.
And that's it-no more hints. Once you discover the second website that's pretty much the end of the mini-ARG-for now...
